The European Commission announced the allocation of 65 million euros from the EU Modernization Fund to support Bulgaria’s ambitious GREENABLER project, which aims to reconstruct power lines and adapt them for electricity generated from clean sources. The Bulgarian government applied for this 857 million euro project in February, and the recently allocated funds will be used for activities planned in 2024.

Bulgaria approves GREENABLER project worth 857 million euros

A spokesperson for the European Commission emphasised that these funds are specifically earmarked for enhancing the capacity to deliver clean energy to consumers.

The GREENABLER Project is divided into two main groups of activities. The first is for the reconstruction of 720 kilometres of existing power lines for their transformation from a voltage level of 220 kilovolts (kV) to 400 kV and synchronised reconstruction of the adjacent substations. The second group is for the reconstruction of the “Hemus – Stara Planina” power line and its transformation from a voltage level of 220 kV to 400 kV, reconstructions of 888 kilometres of 110 kV power lines and the doubling of 92 kilometres of 110 kV power lines in order to increase the transmission capacity of the network.

The proposed investment is in support of the projects set out in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan for the commissioning of 4.5 gigawatts (GW) of new RES, providing the necessary technical opportunity for their connection to the national grid.
