Poland’s power transmission system operator PSE reported on Tuesday (16 April) that the Pomeranian Voivode has issued a building permit for the 400 kV Choczewo – Żarnowiec power transmission line.
This is the first of four power line connections through which energy from the planned offshore wind farms being built in the Baltic Sea is expected to flow within Poland.
“The building permit for the Choczewo-Żarnowiec line is another important step in achieving PSE’s goals related to the transformation of the Polish energy sector. The construction of the highest voltage power grids in northern Poland will make it possible to receive power from new generation sources being built in Pomerania and at the same time will increase the level of energy security in the region,” said Grzegorz Onichimowski, President of Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE).
On 28 July 2023, PSE received an environmental conditions decision for the Choczewo – Żarnowiec line from the Regional Director of Environmental Protection in Gdańsk, and on 13 October 2023, a decision on the strategic location of the transmission network investment was made.
The building permit was issued on 15 April, which will enable the start of fieldwork. The approximately 19.5-kilometre line is designed to run through the villages of Choczewo, Gniewino, and Krokowa, mostly running through forest and agricultural land.
On 12 April this year, PSE signed a contract with Polish construction company Pile Elbud for the implementation of the Choczewo – Żarnowiec line. The commencement of work is planned for later this year, with completion expected by December 2025.
The Choczewo – Żarnowiec line is one of four new transmission connections in the national power system that are expected to enable the delivery of energy from offshore wind farms to consumers in the central and southern parts of the country. The infrastructure is planned to be connected from the currently under-construction Choczewo power station to the existing Żarnowiec power station.
